Where to stay in Bangkok

Since I lived in Bangkok for many years, people often ask me where is the best place to stay. These are some of my favourite places to stay.

Overall best Vibe (This is where I stayed last time)

The Galleria 10 is a hidden gem because the vibe of the hotel itself is great. The top floor has a pool and a good bar where you can chill out all day and feel like you’re not in the centre of Bangkok. Staff, rooms, gym, breakfast, were all great, and it’s right on Sukhumvit Road. It takes a few extra minutes to get to from the airport than the FX, but it’s worth it.

Best location for a short stay:

The FX Makkasan Hotel is the best location because its really easy to get to and from. It is located next to 3 of the 4 main methods of public transport (Airport Link, MRT, and San Saeb Canal) and it’s also 8 minutes walk or 1 stop on the MRT from the Skytrain. I love this place because it means that you hardly ever need to take taxis, even from the airport, which can be a god-sent in rush hour. The rooms are clean but basic and there is a small gym. Great for a quick stop in Bangkok if you want to avoid spending time in traffic.

Near the Tourist Attractions:

If you want to see Bangkok’s main tourist attractions such as Grand Palace, reclining Buddha, etc, you’ll need to stay in the old town. The Navalai River Resort is a great option. It’s close to the tourist places, 5 minutes walk from Khao Sarn Road, and has a pier right next to it where you can take a boat to Saphan Thaksin to connect with the BTS.

Luxury – Thai Feel:

The Ariyasom Hotel is right at the end of Sukhumvit Soi 1 and a total escape from Bangkok. It’s traditional Thai style with a great (quiet) swimming pool and a delicious vegetarian Thai restaurant. It’s a long walk to the main road and the skytrain but the hotel can organise you a tuk tuk.

Luxury – Great Location:

There are plenty of luxury hotels in Bangkok. Sofitel on Sukhumvit is great for location (very near Galleria 10 above). It has a great sky bar which has happy hour from 5 till 7pm where you can enjoy the sunset with buy 1 get 1 free on selected drinks.
